For a long time I believed only what could be measured mattered. I still deeply value evidence, observation, and critical thinking. But eventually I realized there are entire dimensions of human experience that become flattened when we only approach reality analytically.

Science often aims to explain reality. Meditation invites us to experience it directly.

Across cultures and philosophies, there seems to be a recurring understanding that awareness itself matters. Taoism, Buddhism, yogic traditions, mysticism, dualism, nonduality. Despite their differences, many of them return to the same core practices: breath, stillness, attention, observation, presence.

The names change. The language changes. But the thread remains consistent.

In the modern West, science has become our primary language for understanding reality. It has given us extraordinary insights into the nature of the universe and transformed nearly every aspect of human life. Yet in our pursuit of explanation, we sometimes forget the value of direct experience.

What fascinates me is that the deeper science looks, the more reality seems to resist simple reduction. Questions of interconnectedness, observation, consciousness, relationship, and the nature of experience increasingly appear at the frontier of scientific inquiry. In some ways, science and contemplative traditions seem to be approaching the same mysteries from opposite directions.

Modern physics continues to challenge many of the assumptions we take for granted about reality. Experiments have demonstrated that time is not absolute, that it passes differently depending on motion and gravity, and that there is no universal cosmic clock ticking identically for everyone. Research has even shown that particles can become entangled across time itself, suggesting that our intuitive understanding of sequence and separation may be incomplete.

The Double-slit experiment and idea that observation itself can influence outcomes raises questions that extend far beyond modern physics. To me, it points toward a reality that is far stranger, more relational, and less fixed than we want to believe. No matter how many controlled studies we complete, we are not separate from nature, standing outside it as objective witnesses. We are part of the very system we are attempting to understand.

The observer and the observed, the individual and the environment, consciousness and experience seem woven together in ways we are only beginning to comprehend. The deeper we look, the harder it becomes to find true separation anywhere at all.

We know that energy is neither created nor destroyed, only transformed. The atoms that make up our bodies were forged in ancient stars. The breath we take has moved through countless forms of life before reaching us. Seen from that perspective, life feels less like a collection of isolated things and more like an ongoing process of relationship, transformation, and participation.

We are not separate from nature. Just by being, we affect and are affected.

The subtle body is something many ancient traditions spoke about long before neuroscience existed. Energetic pathways, breath, emotional imprinting, consciousness moving through the body. Different cultures developed different maps: chakras, meridians, qi, prana, spirit, life force.

Different cultures arrived at different symbols and systems, but many were attempting to describe the same underlying experiences of breath, awareness, energy, suffering, connection, and consciousness.

You do not need to believe in anything supernatural to notice that emotions live in the body. Trauma lives in the body. Calm changes the body. Breath changes the body. Attention changes the body.

Meditation helped me realize how loud the mind is, and how much deeper awareness goes beneath thought.

Sometimes what people call “vibes” is simply the nervous system perceiving information faster than language can process it. Sometimes it is intuition. Sometimes pattern recognition. Sometimes projection. Sometimes it may be something we simply do not fully understand yet.

How often nature returns to the same patterns. The branching of our lungs, tree limbs, roots, neurons all resemble each other. Galaxies, whirlpools, Jupiter’s storms, smoke. Flower petals growing in Fibonacci sequences and spirals found throughout nature.

Again and again, reality seems to organize itself through relationship, repetition, and pattern. Whether this reflects efficiency, mathematics, emergence, or something deeper, I find it difficult not to be humbled by it. Nature appears less like a collection of separate objects and more like an ongoing conversation of patterns, relationships, and processes unfolding across different scales.

I’m comfortable not having all the answers. I think certainty can sometimes close the door to wonder. Meditation is not about escaping reality. It is about becoming intimate with it.

It is the practice of noticing:

Breath.
Sensation.
Emotion.
Thought.
Stillness.
Resistance.
Presence.

Not to transcend being human, but to fully inhabit it.
